Music Ministry

At Sacred Heart the congregation is the choir !

This ministry is an essential component of Sacred Heart's weekly liturgical celebrations. The priest presides over and leads the prayers, but it is the musicians who create the environment/milieu/ atmosphere for prayer. Music has a twofold purpose at our weekly celebrations: (1) to evoke in the people's hearts the sense of mystery and awe and paschal joy that is the essence of the Eucharist - EVOKE is the ministry; and (2) to help people express those profound sentiments of faith and enter more deeply into the ritual experience. Since there is no "audience" at the Eucharist, there cannot be musical "performance" - no music is done for its own sake or for the musician's sake, but for the sake of the community at worship.

Members of this ministry meet to:

selection of music for seasonal and weekly celebrations;
evaluation/selection of new music for possible inclusion;
scheduling of musicians for liturgical celebrations;
training of cantors and other musicians;
preparation of song sheets;
music practice sessions;
maintenance of a music library;
interfacing with the Liturgy Committee;
weekly coordination with the liturgical celebration coordinator(s);
selection of music and music preparation for Special Celebrations (other than Sundays, such as Holy Week, Vespers).
