Offertory Procession

One of the reasons for our Sunday Eucharist is the elevation of ordinary things so that we can acknowledge their extraordinary goodness and express our continuous gratitude. The simple gifts of bread and wine represent, in their unity, the many grains and grapes of human diversity but also the collective experience of the congregation in terms of works and sufferings and indeed every single element of cosmic reality that God has created. These gifts will become the Body and Blood of Christ which when received in the Eucharist make us one with God, one with each other and one with all creation.

The Offertory Procession Ministry is led by a coordinator who is in charge of the placement of baskets for food contributions, the lighting of candles, the decanting of wine, and the placement of the altar bread (based on the number of communicants). Volunteers are sought to carry the gifts, bearing in mind the spectrum of the congregation: age, gender, ethnic background, etc. After the collection is taken, the procession bears the offerings to the Presider at the altar. This ministry is very much “behind the scenes,” but it adds to the dignity and significance of Sacred Heart’s celebration of the Mass.
